Sea Dragon - shaded

Drawing of a water dragon character of mine. No I'm Not telling you his name. It's a really cool name and it's one of my favorites. But I will tell you what his name means. It means water-song. Also he favors the bow. Yes there will be weapons... lots of weapons.

Note: There is a major difference between sea-dragon and sea-serpent.

As a sea-dragon I wanted to draw him in a sharp way to make you feel how they can cut right through the water. The claws are longer and thinner as they don't do much digging in the dirt. They are however useful for spearing and holding fish. They can't fly but can glide at great speeds when jumping from the water. The wings can fold much like a Chinese fan. They also have extendable fins on their forearms which give them great maneuverability in the water. It almost looks as though they have 4 wings when seen darting threw the water. That is, if you can see them at all. They have no gills but breath both air and water though adapted lungs. They are reclusive as a race of dragons due to the water being such a culture barrier. And tho they speak the common language they have also developed their own specialized dialect which involves hand gestures or a form of sign-language to use underwater. They are lethal hunters and just as capable on land tho at a disadvantage against other races.

Of all the dragons i had drawn up to this point this was one of the first more thoroughly designed characters. What with the frills and markings. It definitely carried a strong theme in efforts to make you feel the sharpness and their swiftness as a creature. There was also more attention to anatomy here, though it was a feeble attempt as I have yet to master the intricacies of flesh and bone. Something so much more complicated than wood and stone.
